Question 1. How can NEW support professional people?

There are 3 ways we can support adults in their professional life:

1) The first way is coaching them to do well on TOEIC, which is a test of English competence.

2) The second way is by leading them through our Business Communication course.

3) And the third way is with what we call Business Coaching.

Question 2 – Why these three courses?

Many international companies in Thailand use TOEIC to motivate employees to improve their English by rewarding them with a higher salary if they reach a certain score.

Attaining a score of about 550 is enough to be able to pick up the phone and talk to a colleague in Germany, say, and be able to understand each other.

This is valuable, both to the employer and the employee.

Why Business Communication?

Like TOEIC, this is suitable for adults working in an international corporation or organisation – or for young adults planning a career with an international group.

It teaches the standard vocabulary and phrases that are internationally recognised in large companies around the world.

What is Business Coaching?

It is a bit different from Business Communication. This is mostly for more senior managers who need help to advance or succeed in an international role where communication in English is holding them back.

It is a customised course, and focuses on the student’s specific problems – these could be due to cultural differences, or not understanding some concepts, or simply fear of speaking English in public.

Question 3 – Can you go into a bit more detail about the three courses you offer?

1) Certainly. For TOEIC, we offer the student a choice: to study with a native English speaker or to study with a Thai teacher.

The advantage of studying with Thai teachers is that they will teach the tips and tricks for maximizing your score in a short time. Only two skills are covered – listening and reading, which is all that is required in the test. It’s perfect for students on a limited budget.

The advantage of using a native English speaker is that the student will also practice their speaking skills as the course will be taught in English. But it necessarily takes a bit longer.

2) The Business Communication course is suitable for classes of 3 to 20 or more. It is popular with corporate training, where the teacher will either go to the company and train classes, or do it online. This has a large element of team-building as an additional benefit since the classes mix people from different departments, and the stronger students help the weaker ones.

We also hold smaller classes in our school in Future Park, Rangsit – which is good to meet people from different businesses and make new friends.

Before we start a class, we assess the level of each student with a test of reading, writing, listening and speaking so as to place the student into the class at the right level for them. We also interview the student to find out how they use English at work and what they want from the course. Based on this, we find the best match of teacher and course book for each class.

The teacher will work through the course book with the class in a conversational style, encouraging students to share their experiences with the class. One clear objective is to overcome the students’ fear of making mistakes by focusing on communicating their ideas rather than focusing on grammar drills.

3) The Business Coaching course is tailor-made for the student and relates directly to what the student needs to succeed.

We hold an initial interview with the student to understand their needs, then write a proposal outlining the objectives of the course and the approach that the teacher will take.

Being a private class, the focus can change as new problems arise later in the course.

Sometimes the student’s communication problem is cultural – German and American people, for example, say exactly what they mean (if they don’t agree, they will tell you directly), but other cultures prefer to speak indirectly which leads to misunderstandings.

Sometimes the problem is with a misalignment in concepts which could be management style,  environmental policies, EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity) in the workplace, CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), or circular economy – there are many areas where Thai practices are not always aligned with the parent company ideas, again leading to misunderstandings.

Often the problem is that the student does not participate enough in meetings, since they are ensure whether they have understood what has been said or for fear of making a mistake when giving their opinion.

In these, and other cases, the teacher will work closely with the student to explain concepts, listen to recordings of meetings to clarify unfamiliar idioms or words, prepare the questions they want to ask in meetings, polish their presentations, check an important email and, Whatever support the student needs to succeed.
